The article analyzes an anonymous letter written by imprisoned women in the Casa de Recogidas in Santiago de Chile. Dated 1740, it is a unique document that shows the inmates’ perspectives, many of them prostitutes or women of “mala vida”, in denouncing the faults and corruption existing in their administration. The article reveals how concepts such as honor, scandal, and guilt displace their meaning to question the association of women with sin and social corruption.
