This paper aims at demonstrating that the Chilean literary magazines published from 1895 to 1901, appropriated and textualized the modernist stream in diverse ways, because these newspapers were neither passive means facing scriptural replacement, nor uniform discursive vehicles, although most of the studies acknowledge them as modernist publications. In order to accomplish this, we identify the tensions the magazines built around Rubén Dario’s aesthetics and representational systems, analyzing two Modernist lines of appropriation: professionalization of the writer, and discussions regarding modernist writing.
