Abstract

In this investigation we establish a conservation system for reinforced concrete bridges, through autonomous remote monitoring, installing corrosion sensors and transmitting the signs for wireless radio modems in real time, with the purpose of timely correcting the damages caused by corrosion in marine environments. The study is based on a complete evaluation and diagnosis of bridges using electrochemical techniques like Corrosion Potential Mapping (ASTM C876) and Polarization Resistance (ASTM G59). Using this system, it becomes possible to install instruments in reinforced concrete bridges, without affecting the structural integrity and preserving the aesthetics of the structures. Furthermore, it is also now possible to have a permanent track record of the performance of the structures in service, on a continuous basis for each season of the year, and to know the residual life of such structures. In addition, this study will contribute to eliminate nonprogrammed maintenance activities.
